We are saddened by the recent passing of Deborah Pinkerton. Deb had a deep connection with the UC Davis Arboretum and a zeal for outdoor education. Her experiences as an environmental educator in the Arboretum fueled a life-long love for engaging people with nature.
The Deborah N. Pinkerton Arboretum Prize was created by Deborah and her husband Bret Hewitt in 1996 to honor exceptional students working in the Arboretum. The Prize recognizes and encourages UC Davis students who share Deb's love for the environment and who make an impact through their work as education interns at the Arboretum.
Mentoring and developing student leaders is central to the mission of the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden. Through its innovative Learning by Leading program, Arboretum and Public garden staff engage teams of undergraduate students in meaningful learning and leadership experiences. By tackling real-world challenges, these students gain the confidence and skill to have a transformative impact on our environment.
