Over the past 50 years California and Israel have emerged as dynamic centers of scientific innovation, fueling economic growth. Work conducted in universities and research institutes has produced key advances in information technology, cybersecurity, high-tech engineering and manufacturing, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare. California and Israel also share a dry Mediterranean climate and are at the forefront of efforts to enhance food security on a planet with diminishing freshwater resources. Kindred spirits animate the creative entrepreneurship of the “Start-up Nation” and Silicon Valley. The California-Israel Collaborations in Research Program encourages collaborative scientific investigations between researchers at the University of California and Israel by funding seed grants and travel grants. We seek to use relatively small amounts of funding to catalyze new collaborations that can grow into major, long-term research efforts that leverage other sources of research funding.
