Jon Vochatzer was known simply as "Coach Vee" to his many student-athletes. It's also symbolic of his down-to-earth approach to the hundreds of Aggies he coached and mentored over a UC Davis career that began in 1979, included a stint on the football staff in the early 1980s, and didn't end until his retirement in 2010. His tenure was marked by incredible success, including four top-10 finishes at the NCAA Div. II Championships. Among them was a third-place showing at the 2001 outdoor meet and a third-place performance at the 2000 indoor championship. Jon garnered an impressive 12 West Region Coach of the Year honors and was recognized seven times as the Northern California Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. He received similar accolades from the California Collegiate Athletic Association on six occasions. He mentored 80 Aggies to All-America status with nine of them claiming NCAA championships. Jon then directed the program into its Div. I era, serving early notice in the Big West Conference when the Aggies finished second at the league championships in just their second season. The program also had four qualifiers for the NCAA Div. I Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships over it's first two years. Jon passed away on February 22, 2016 after experiencing a stroke.
