Our HD research team is working on mesenchymal stem cells engineered to produce Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, a growth factor to keep neurons healthy and connected in the brain. This factor unfortunately is reduced to very low levels in Huntington’s disease and needs to be normalized. The initial laboratory work for this was funded by our state stem cell funding agency (CIRM) and we are now raising funds to complete the final work needed to progress into the proposed clinical trial.
