The Reed-Smith Travel Research Awards were established in 2004, by a donation from the Phillip D. Reed Foundation, on behalf of Professor Emeritus Wilson Smith. Smith was a Professor in the Department of History from 1964-1990. He continued to work with graduate students long after his retirement.

The award is used to fund travel and/or expenses beyond the contiguous United States, to engage students in research toward a doctoral dissertation subject, projected or in progress. Upon completion of their travel, students submit a one-page summary of her or his research findings.
