The Summer Health Institute for Nursing Exploration and Success program (SHINES) is a Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing initiative led by Associate Dean for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Dr. Piri Ackerman-Barger.
Research shows that rural and underserved communities are healthier when the health practitioners that serve them look like them and are a part of their community. SHINES is a summer program that works with underrepresented high school students (or recently graduated adults) who are interested in nursing and other medical careers.
The purpose of the program is to poise local high school students (or recently graduated adults) to become informed to make professional and academic decisions about whether nursing is a right fit for them, what nursing pathways would suit their needs, and how to become successful in their academic aspirations. By the end of the program participants will understand the community impact they can make by returning to their communities as a respected health practitioner to serve the people they know and love.
