Gifts to the Tahoe Environmental Research Center’s (TERC’s) Nearshore Network help complete this novel approach to tracking the health of Tahoe’s ever-changing shoreline. Once completed there will be water quality stations every 2-3 miles around the shore warning of the effects of sewage spills and algal blooms, rising temperatures or pollutants entering the lake from streams and drains. Coupled with cameras that are trained on the shoreline and underwater cameras that show lake life itself, no detail of the nearshore will be missed. A complementary phone app for collecting nearshore data from citizen scientists has already been developed.
