Founded in 2009 at UC Davis, Sacramento Area Youth Speaks (SAYS) strives to change the world through education. Building on a foundation of critical literacy practices, SAYS breaks the chains of underachievement by elevating the voices of young people. To fulfill our vision, SAYS takes great strides to connect high-risk youth to higher education. Our approach is to use spoken word performance poetry as a doorway into the lives of young people, encouraging them to write, read, and speak about themselves and their communities. This evidence-based approach to literacy and leadership development supports disadvantaged young people to become authors of their own lives and agents of change. Check out our SAYS Summit College Day Video to learn first hand how SAYS transforms lives. Your gift to SAYS will support the improvement of under-performing schools through student literacy development and teacher professional development.
