George, Becky, and Jay Stromgren Scholarship Fund

UC Davis Athletics owes a lot of its rich history to a fine group of individuals, who not only helped shape the program, but also instilled many of the ideals that govern Aggie athletics today. George A. Stromgren was one of those people.

Stromgren came to UC Davis in 1936 after graduating from UC Berkeley. He served 17 seasons as the head coach of the Aggie basketball team, enjoying back-to-back Far Western Conference championships in 1939 and 1940. Stromgren had 112 wins as basketball coach, third on the all-time Aggie list.

Like many of his contemporaries, however, Stromgren also coached other sports. For 28 years he led the UC Davis men's tennis team, winning four conference championships. He coached baseball for one season and was a longtime assistant coach with the football team.

Stromgren's influence though extended beyond coaching. He is remembered as having keen interest in his student-athletes in the classroom and was a mentor to countless individuals for more than 30 years at UC Davis.

One of his greatist gifts to the department was his compilation of several editions of "Mustang Memories," which help provide a rich history of Aggie athletics from their very beginning in 1900.

George was inducted posthumously into the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997 but what he stood for remains. The Stromgren Fund recognizes the entire family: George, Becky and their son, Jay.
