Herb's natural athletic talent and love of sports became apparent while he was growing up in Oakland, California. He attended Albany High School where he lettered in football, baseball and basketball. At graduation he was awarded a football scholarship to Washington State University. His studies were interrupted by World War II and he enlisted in the Navy and chose the Submarine Service where he became a Radioman assigned to the SS Baleo stationed on the east coast. After the war he enrolled at UC Berkeley where he thrived in his studies and became a member of the legendary Pappy Waldorf football teams and participated in the 1948 and 1949 Rose Bowl games. After graduation Herb stayed on for a graduate year and was an assistant coach with the freshman football team. He then accepted a position at Pacific Grove High School where he became a winning football and baseball coach and taught American history and was an excellent role model for his students. Five years later he returned to Cal to earn his masters degree then accepted a teaching and coaching position at UC Davis where he remained until his retirement in 1991. Always a champion of fair play and a man of unswerving high integrity, Herb is remembered by many of his former students as having taught them valuable life lessons by his example.
