Milicent Frederick Memorial Scholar-Athlete Award

Sports Illustrated for Women named UC Davis as the best Division II school for women athletes in 1999 and 2000, and UC Davis has produced three student-athletes named the NCAA Woman of the Year. Those accolades came as the result of a lot of hard work. Today’s Aggies benefit from pioneers like Mil who helped do the work of Title IX before the law was conceptualized.

Mil attended UC Davis between 1960 and 1965, serving roles as both a participant and an ardent proponent of women’s athletics. She competed in seven sports at UC Davis while also serving as president of the Women’s Athletic Association (WAA) and helping champion the progression of women’s athletics on campus.

Mil helped draft the WAA constitution and was a key figure in getting the Pacific Southwest Regional Athletic and Recreation Federation to select UC Davis as its Presiding School. She also was an outstanding student-athlete who helped lead the Aggies to excellence in badminton, basketball, field hockey, softball, swimming, track & field and volleyball.

After graduating from UC Davis, Mil went on to teach Physical Education and coach a number of sports at Fern Bacon Middle School in Sacramento for 36 years. The Cal Aggie Athletic Hall of Fame inducted Mil in 2000.

Through her endowment we remember Mil and her efforts by passing the torch to the next generation. The Milicent Frederick Memorial Scholar-Athlete Award is given annually to one or more female undergraduate student-athletes on the basketball, field hockey, gymnastics, softball, swimming, track & field or volleyball team who has performed both academically and athletically at UC Davis in such a way as to be a model for the highest standards of the university scholar-athlete.
