Lois and Darryl Goss funded the Joe Singleton Athletic Award to honor Joe and his dedication to UC Davis students. The UC Davis Foundation matched the Goss' gift as part of The Campaign for UC Davis. Darryl was a wide receiver on the Aggie football team during Joe's 14-year span as UC Davis Director of Athletics in the 1970's and 80's. Joe was inducted into the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.

Highlighting Joe's tenure with UC Davis were several championships, including 14 straight conference titles in football, a combined six league titles from men's and women's basketball and 27 conference championships from the remaining squads. Joe helped secure critical funding for athletics in the 1980's and helped foster a greater awareness of women's athletics which helped lead to NCAA championships for women.

Additionally, under his leadership, UC Davis hosted six televised NCAA Division II playoff football games, two regionals in soccer, a men's golf championship, a national wrestling event and two national gymnastics championships. Singleton was an active member of many NCAA committees throughout his career including seven years as chair of the Postgraduate Scholarship Committee and also as member of the prestigious Executive Committee (1977-84).

Singleton's service to the NCAA also was marked by terms on the Executive Committee on Standards (1981-82) and the Presidential Committee on NCAA Legislative and Governance Committee (1988-89). He also served a four-year term from 1976-80 on the NACDA Executive Committee. Prior to becoming Director of Athletics, Singleton was an assistant coach in both football and track & field. He came to UC Davis in 1969.

The Singleton endowment supports a football student-athlete majoring in Ethnic Studies, Chicano Studies or African American Studies (or second choice a non-football student-athlete from one of those majors).
