McNair Scholars Program

The UC Davis McNair Scholars Program is a two-year program funded by TRIO and the U.S. Department of Education. Ronald E. McNair was a physicist and astronaut whose life was cut short by the Challenger Space Shuttle accident in 1986 and the McNair Scholars Program is named in his honor. It aims to increase the number of doctoral degrees awarded to individuals underrepresented in graduate education by getting them involved in research and scholarly activities. The UC Davis McNair Scholars Program was born during the winter quarter in 1996 and is a two-year TRIO program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Participants are involved in research, networking opportunities, workshops, seminars and Graduate Record Exam preparation. Eighteen to 20 UC Davis undergraduates and incoming transfer students are selected each year to participate in academic year and summer activities.

As McNair Scholars Program alumni, we are seeking your support. The US Department of Education limits how funds are expended and the program is seeking your contribution to expand the capability of the program. We have set a goal to seek other foundation support to augment the opportunities that the McNair Scholars Program currently provides. Donations would be used to augment scholar stipends, university visits and academic support for the students. We invite you to help us invest in our Scholars' accomplishments and assist them in their journey toward receiving a Ph.D.
