Established in 2025, the Winston's Golden Promise Fund was created to provide support for canine cancer research at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, with a preference for research focused on hemangiosarcoma. Funds may also be used to advance broader genetic and clinical research aimed at improving the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancers and related conditions affecting Golden Retrievers and other canine breeds.

The following message comes from Winston’s family, whose love for him inspired the creation of this fund:

We recently lost our beloved Golden Retriever, Winston, to hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive form of canine cancer. Like anyone who cares deeply about their furry soulmates, we wanted to do everything possible to give him more quality time to enjoy life and his favorite things.

We found hope and inspiration through this journey at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, home to one of the largest and most advanced veterinary oncology programs in the world. Their clinicians and researchers collaborate closely with UC Davis Health’s Comprehensive Cancer Center, because many cancers in dogs mirror those in humans. Together, they are developing new treatments— advancing care for both pets and people.

To honor Winston, we created Winston’s Golden Promise, a fund dedicated to supporting UC Davis research in early diagnosis, and the development of new treatments including immunotherapies, and clinical trials that give pets and families more time together.

We invite you to join us in celebrating Winston, who we loved as The Big Easy, in supporting the science that can change the future for countless pets and the people who love them.

With heartfelt gratitude,
Anne Marie and Geoff
